Type 1 Diabetic Gets Great Results Eating Smart Carb # 1 Bread By The Julian Bakery

Today is Julian Bakery’s very first Diabetic Analysis ever! A lot of our customers want to know what kind of affect Julian Bakery bread has on their blood sugar, and rightly so!  From what we know about ketosis, blood glucose levels are essential to being in fat burning mode. These levels are also vital information to someone with Diabetes.  In response to an overwhelming amount of speculation, we will be posting various results from our Diabetic Customers who are submitting their BGL results after eating our breads.
To clarify, Smart Carb #1 bread has been designed to be Low-Carb bread.  The Julian Bakery has thousands of Type 1 & Type 2 Diabetic customers nationwide, like this one that eats our bread daily and get great results: (Click Here For Larger Version Of Graph)

Customers like this one can eat Smart Carb #1 bread with minimal glucose spike.  Based on the information that we have currently, about 85% of our Diabetic customers can digest Smart Carb #1 with minimal or no sugar spike.
Our very first customer to submit results comes from Matt (Results Pictured Above), a customer of ours who works for DexCom, the leading blood glucose meter.  Matt is a Type 1 Diabetic who wrote to us after measuring his blood glucose levels with a DexCom unit every 15 minutes after a 5-hour fast followed by eating 2 slices of Julian Bakery Smart Carb #1.  We have assumed that a 4-5 hour fast is a typical time period between meals.  Matt was not on any insulin medication during this time period.  As seen in his results, Matt started with a BGL of 110 mg/dl, which is typical of a Diabetic after fasting.  One hour after eating 2 slices of Smart Carb #1, Matt’s BGL peaked at 131 mg/dl.  This is only an increase of 21 mg/dl, keeping Matt well within the parameters of ‘normal’ for a Type 1 Diabetic after eating.
According to the American Diabetes Association, goals for glucose control in people with diabetes are sugar levels of 70 to 130 mg/dL before meals, and less than 180 mg/dL after meals.  Matt was so pleased with his results that he recommends our bread to other Diabetics as well as the Diabetic Doctors he knows. For those low carb diet customers we have also had amazing feedback from our customers like this one on Facebook from Lois Dyal, she writes "I tried Smart Carb # 1 on induction and still remained in ketosis and it did not hinder my progress at all. I love it I have a sandwich at least 4 days a week."

Stay tuned to the Julian Bakery blog to watch as we compile and announce this valuable blood glucose data from our customers!

Amazing Sourdough Bread By The Julian Bakery

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE sourdough bread!  I would use it for every sandwich I ever ate if I could.  The only reason I have avoided sourdough in the past is because I associated it with plain white bread in terms of its nutritional value.  That’s only because I didn’t know about Julian Bakery’s Amazing Sourdough bread.  There’s no better way to describe this sourdough loaf than the ‘Amazing’ that’s already inferred from its name.  Every slice of this amazingly guilt free sourdough contains 60 calories, 5g of complete protein, 6g of fiber, 4 net carbs, and absolutely no fat.  What really separates this sourdough bread from the rest is the added chicory root, which allows carbohydrates to pass through your body without being broken down and absorbed.

Amazing Sourdough is perfect for keeping a low calorie count during low-carb dieting.  It’s nearly common sense that taking in fewer daily calories than your body is burning is essential to losing weight.  This high fiber, low calorie bread is specifically designed to increase satiety so that you feel satisfied throughout the day.  If you are counting calories or on a low-carb diet, but still want great tasting bread, Julian Bakery’s Amazing Sourdough is the perfect loaf for you!

To help you fully understand how great this Amazing Sourdough bread is for you, I have to dig deep into our Amazing Sourdough fermentation process, and how it breaks down phytates to open up nutrient bioavailability.  The fermentation process includes wild yeast and bacteria which create an end product that is healthier and more digestible than most commercial sourdoughs.  Some of this bread’s terrific health benefits include bacteria which help balance your intestinal flora, improvement in digestion, and an increase in bioavailability of nutrients.  In most bread, indigestible phytates bind to minerals, making them unavailable for digestion.  In sourdough, the fermented bacteria dissolve the phytates, freeing the healthy minerals and making them absorbable.  The healthy bacteria in Sourdough fermentation also contributes to the nutritional value by:

Pre-digesting starches, making the bread easier to digest

  • Breaking down gluten, making it tolerable for gluten-sensitive stomachs
  • Lowering insulin response & improving glucose tolerance
  • Protecting Vitamin B1 from being damaged during baking

For the most phytase activity and thus the most unbound minerals, check out our Real Sourdough Rye. Time and time again, sourdough rye bread is scientifically proven as the healthiest bread. Stay tuned to the Julian Bakery blog for a future post on the great benefits of Rye.

Julian Bakery’s Amazing Sourdough is unique bread designed to curb your appetite and allow you to take in less calories, preventing you from feeling bloated. This soft, delicious bread is absolutely great with any meal! This bread is available in hundreds of stores across the country.  Use the Julian Bakery store finder to locate a Julian Bakery wholesaler near you.  You can also place orders online and have us bake and ship your bread fresh to your door. Julian Bakery's HCG Diet Alternative: Intro

If you are on a weight loss mission like the rest of America, there are an overwhelming amount of low-carb, smart-carb, no-carb, and high-carb diet plans available to you.  If you haven’t decided which one of the many diet plans is best for you and your health, this may be a good series for you.  Before I dive head first into dieting, I want to make sure that if you are considering starting any major diet change, you should:

  • Complete your due diligence and know what you are getting yourself into
  • Research as much information about the diet as you can
  • Consult a physician to make sure the diet doesn’t conflict with any current medical issues

If you have been following the Julian Bakery blog, you have learned that a low carbohydrate diet is essential to getting your body into ketosis and burning fat as energy.  I personally have had great success losing fat weight during low-carb eating, so I know first hand how great ketosis works.  Some of the most popular low-carb diets are Atkins, New Glucose Revolution, Low GL Diet, and South Beach.  Julian Bakery carries a great low-carb bread selection to help keep your carb count down if pursuing one of these diet methods.

Unfortunately, Americans these days live a very face paced and impatient lifestyle.  Many people are obsessed with the idea of perfection, and impatient dieters want to see immediate results.  For those of us who tend to be on the more extreme side of things, there is a lot of talk regarding a rather controversial dieting method called hCG dieting.  After discovering this unique diet method, I became intrigued by the theory and read every study I could find across the medical and nutrition world.  At first I was a little skeptical, as the original hCG protocol had a 500 daily calorie intake limit and required no exercise!  Anyone that’s ever looked at a nutrition label knows that 500 Cal/day is a very small amount.  The theory is that a 500 daily calorie diet supplemented with either injections or oral drops of hCG, (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) promotes fat burning and weight loss up to 1lb per day, without any exercise, feelings of starvation, irritation or fatigue.

Without surprise, hCG, like the other weight loss mechanisms we’ve discussed, is a hormone!  It’s produced in the pituitary gland of both sexes, but is known primarily for its production in females during pregnancy.  It is obvious that anyone eating a 500 Cal/day diet is going to lose weight quickly, however my primary concerns were that the body would begin burning muscle proteins for energy instead of fat (See my Ketosis Article), and that I wouldn’t be able to exercise on the diet.  There have been numerous research studies with positive results showing that the hCG works, however the studies that I found did not go into depth regarding muscle measurements.

After becoming so intrigued with this dieting theory, I began calling clinics that provide hCG to ask them some questions.  Julian Bakery has a few of these exact clinics in our customer database, due to the fact that the low-carb count of Smart Carb #1 is perfect for hCG dieters.  The one that really stuck out to me was MediPro Direct.  This clinic claims to have a patented hCG serum that contains a few other supplements that are designed to make sure that during the low calorie diet, your body only burns fat, and not muscle.  Their program also allows for more calorie intake (between 800 – 1000 Calories) in order to allow regular exercise while on the diet.  This is exactly what I was looking for: a less intense version of the diet, that doesn’t require cutting out exercise.

After reading, researching, and contemplating how I was going to go about writing a quality article on hCG, I decided that I couldn’t promote this unconventional diet without actually trying it out on my own.  So I contacted MediPro Direct and worked out a partnership between them and Julian Bakery so that I could see if hCG really works.  One of my coworkers here at Julian Bakery, Elisa, also wanted in on this intriguing test run, so I agreed.  What better way to get the full scope of hCG dieting than to team up with a weight loss clinic and compare notes between both a male and female attempting the diet?

For 40 days starting in July, Elisa and I will be posting as many details about our hCG diet experience as we can.  We want our readers to be with us every step of the way so that they can make a decision on their own about this intriguing diet.  We will be posting real time stats, numbers, food intake, feelings, emotions, and thoughts.  Starting tomorrow, July 6th, you can find every last detail of our hCG diet experiment on: http://julianbakeryhcg.blogspot.com/.  We will also be posting semi-regularly here on our main Julian Bakery blog so that our readers can stay updated.  Keep checking back to read all the details of our hCG diet experience!

JULIAN BAKERY BREAD MAKES WALDORF SALADS EVEN BETTER

A Waldorf Salad with Blue Cheese dressing is awesome on its own, but add any of the Julian Bakery breads on the side and you have a meal in itself.

The flavors and textures of any of the Julian Bakery breads will enhance any salad and make it a crowd pleaser for sure.

I personally think the apples, celery and walnuts in a Waldorf Salad with go beautifully with Julian Bakery’s Dinner Bread, which would compliment any meal, or their Bean Bread, Manna from Heaven Bread or their new Purity Bread.

Dinner Bread is wheat, yeast and sweet free. It is complete protein bread and is delicious with soups and salads. The chia seeds on the outside are high-energy seeds that compliment the flavor of the bread. It is made with fresh ground whole grain Kamut®, millet, amaranth, chia seeds, onion, rosemary and sea salt.

Bean Bread is gluten free, sweetened with honey and yeast risen. It is very high in protein and fiber for those wanting to lose a few extra pounds or just wanting to maintain a healthy body. It is made from fresh, stone ground, whole grains of brown rice, millet, buckwheat, pinto beans, eggs, onions, guar gum, honey, yeast and sea salt.

Manna from Heaven is an all sprouted, wheat, yeast and sweet free, smart carb bread that is high in fiber and protein. It is made with sprouted whole grains of Kamut®, spelt, rye, millet, quinoa, amaranth, lentils, quinoa, sesame and flax seeds and sea salt.

Purity Bread is the first whole grain, complete protein bread on the market that is gluten free, low carb, sweet free, yeast free and wheat fee, with sprouted beans. It is made with raw buckwheat, millet, short grain brown rice, teff and freshly ground flaxseed. It also has 13 sprouted, ground beans, onion, guar gum and sea salt.

First, make the Blue Cheese Dressing
1/3 cup plain fat-free yogurt
1 T fat-free mayonnaise or salad dressing
1 T finely crumbled blue cheese

Mix all ingredients. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour to blend flavors.

Then prepare the Salad
2 medium, unpeeled red apples, cut into ¼ inch slices
Lemon juice
Spinach leaves
1 medium stalk, celery, thinly sliced (about a ½ cup)
2 T chopped walnuts, toasted

Sprinkle apples slices with lemon juice. Place apple slices on spinach. Spoon dressing over salad. Sprinkle with celery and walnuts. Serve with your favorite Julian Bakery bread, fresh or toasted with a little butter.

Enjoy, Samantha

HEALTH BENEFITS OF JULIAN BAKERY BREADS

HEALTH BENEFITS OF JULIAN BAKERY BREADS

All of Julian Bakery’s breads are extremely high in fiber, especially Manna from Heaven, which is a great sculpt and cleanse bread, perfect for shaping your stomach.

Fiber is comprised of soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber is used by the body for nutrition. Insoluble fiber is not digestible.

If you are on a low-fat diet, ensuring you are getting enough soluble fiber can help reduce your risk of heart disease. Fiber is also important for normal bowel function and can curb your appetite.

Julian Bakery’s Sourdough, yeast-free breads are cultured, which makes them easier to digest, contributing to the friendly flora of our intestines. They are a low stress food, providing predigested released nutrients from the culturing process.

The sprouted grains of Manna from Heaven, Smart Carb #1 and Cinnamon Almond Raisin offer higher quality proteins and nutrients. Sprouts are highly digestible and have a rich supply of enzymes. This quality makes them easily assimilated and metabolized by the body.

The ground flax seed found in the Manna from Heaven, Smart Carb #1, Cinnamon Almond Raisin, Wonderful and Mama Bear breads offer the value of being high in Omega 3 and is anti-inflammatory.

Freshly stone ground whole grains provide a natural whole food for vibrant health. Grinding organic grains in a stone mill prior to baking prevents rancid flour, while achieving more flavor and nutrition.

Combining flours from different grains enhances taste, texture and nutritional content.

I would like to share a couple testimonials with you…

“Your Smart Carb bread is indescribably delicious! My husband and I are so hooked on this bread that we panic when we only have one loaf remaining in the freezer. Thank you for such a wonderful, wholesome product. Rest assured, we are loyal customers forever!”
Dana and Jim

“I adore your breads. I think if more people ate the high protein, healthy carbohydrate breads you make, they would be much healthier, much trimmer and have so much more energy. I have low blood sugar, and I can’t tell you how wonderful it is to have such tasty bread that doesn’t increase my carbo cravings, and leaves me satisfied. You can quote me on that! And please keep up the good work.”
All best, Evelyn

History of The Julian Bakery

If this is your introduction to the Julian Bakery, you’re in for a real treat – a taste treat of breads that is.

The Julian Bakery began 20 years ago in the quaint, historical town of Julian, in the mountains above San Diego, California. An expansion led the business to the seaside community of La Jolla, California, still in the county of San Diego.

Owner and nutritionist, Barbara Squier, creates unbelievable breads; breads you can’t even imagine exist. OK, that’s how I felt when I was first introduced to Barbara and her breads, way back when. I had never seen such beautiful loaves, or smelled such incredible aromas; nor did I know bread could even weigh so much. I can’t tell you how many customers have told me they feel full after eating just one slice.

The bakery’s customers love the distinct taste of the variety of different grains, while enjoying the health benefits of breads made without preservatives or synthetic chemicals.

There are so many flavors and textures from which to choose, your taste buds will just scream, “THANK YOU!” There is something for most everyone: celiacs, diabetics, low carb dieters, vegetarians, vegans, children, and even the most discriminating gourmets. Anyone who is looking for marvelous, healthy, innovative and delicious breads will be ecstatic they found the Julian Bakery.

There are 1 ½ lb. sliced loaves and 1 lb. unsliced rounds, all chock-full of natural, organic and healthy ingredients. There are Low Carb, Wheat Free, Yeast Free, Sweet Free, Gluten Free breads to suit your individual needs.

JB’s most popular breads are the Manna from Heaven, recommended for a healthy heart, diabetes and weight release by Dr. Rosedale in his diet book, and Smart Carb #1, with a net 1 carb per slice, also recommended by Dr. Rosedale.

Finding the Julian Bakery might just change the way you view eating and the way you plan your meals, especially if you have had to go without bread for so long, because you could not find any that suited your needs. For me? I find the Apple Cinnamon Raisin suits my needs for French toast just fine….and I could eat half a round of Real Sourdough Rye dunked in olive oil and vinegar, along with a home cooked Italian meal…but that’s just me.

Stay tuned…I will be giving you loads of information on the health benefits of each bread and its ingredients, along with recipe ideas and much more in the near future.

Enjoy, Samantha
